Bishop Paulin Maurice Michel, affectionately known as Pastor Michel, was born in Jérémie, the capital of Haiti’s Grand’Anse Department. From humble beginnings, he grew into one of Haiti’s most devoted church leaders, known not only for preaching the Gospel but also for transforming communities through education.
After leaving Jérémie for Port-au-Prince, he briefly served in the Haitian army before establishing himself as a respected tailor. His life changed completely when he accepted Christ at the Church of God on Rue du Centre. His conversion gave him a new purpose — to serve both God and the Haitian people.
As his ministry expanded from the Pentecostal Church of 5th Avenue Bolosse to Mission Maranatha in Delmas, and later to the Church of God Holiness, Pastor Michel carried one unshakable conviction: wherever the Word of God was preached, a school must also rise. He believed that true ministry cared not only for the soul but also for the mind.
Ordained in 1971 by Minister Mark J. Surbrook, Pastor Michel became the national leader of the Church of God Holiness in Haiti. During his missionary journeys across the country, he discovered that most children in rural areas had no access to education. With faith and determination, he began founding schools in every community where he preached.
The first was built in Bonnet, a poor village west of Port-au-Prince. That modest school became a light of hope, soon followed by others across the Centre and Sud-Est Departments. Each time Bishop Michel established a church, he worked to open a school beside it, often adding a canteen so students could receive a daily meal. Many of those children grew up to become doctors, engineers, teachers, and community leaders.
One of Bishop Michel’s greatest accomplishments was rebuilding the small church in Delmas 6 into a strong and vibrant center of worship and service. His legacy stands not only in the churches he built but in the countless lives lifted by the schools he founded living proof of his belief that the Gospel must educate, nourish, and empower.
